Founded in 1954, the Lyric Opera of Chicago has presented both classic and newly commissioned works. The company recently announced details of its 2016-2017 season.
Leading off the 2016 productions is Richard Wagner’s Das Rheingold, the first work of the composer’s famed Ring cycle. The story highlights the Rhinemaidens, who protect a supply of gold that, when fashioned into a ring, grants tremendous powers. A man named Alberich steals the gold, threatening the leader of the gods, Wotan.
Next is another favorite, Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti, an opera in which Reicin has sung. One of the genre’s great examples of bel canto singing, the opera revolves around the romance between Lucia and her lover Edgardo. Playing the title role is Albina Sagimuratova, who has won critical acclaim for her performance.
Les Troyens (The Trojans) follows in a Lyric Opera premiere. The epic scale of Hector Berlioz’s work makes it a seldom-performed masterpiece. Music lovers will appreciate the exciting performance of a large chorus and powerful orchestra.
Appearing at the Lyric Opera in 2017 are three more theatrical hits: Carmen, Eugene Onegin, and My Fair Lady. More information about all performances can be found at LyricOpera.org/.
